MASON CENTER FOR TEAM AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING   "THE EDGE"  WED. SEPT. 8, 2010

Our middle school will go to The Edge on Wednesday September 8, leaving at 8:30 and arriving back at the school around 4:30. Students need to wear their physical education uniform and bring a bag lunch and several bottles of water (no glass please). Please make sure the permission form and check is returned to the school by Tuesday September 7, (both sheets of the permission form needs to be signed). Please let your child’s teacher know if you can drive to and from The Edge, I also need at least 8 parents who can stay the day and chaperone one of the groups. The Edge is an outdoor learning challenge course located at the GMU Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center. The course is part of the new Mason Center for Team and Organizational Learning, Energize, Develop, Grow, Excel (EDGE) program. The Edge replaces and expands upon almost a quarter century of experience of leadership and team-building programming that GMU previously operated at Hemlock Overlook Center. The Edge will offer a number of high and low challenge by choice elements; the Alpine Tower, the Zipline, the Spiderweb, the Whale Watch, the Walls, the Wild Woozy and the Mohawk Walk.  Thanks as always for your support, without your support this field trip would not be possible.

GRADE 2     Grade 2

The State of Virginia requires Health and Physical Education as a basic part of the school curriculum. The following list covers those points that are significant to you and your child for this school year.

Grading: Students will receive a grade based on physically participating in physical education, following class rules and being in the proper uniform. If behavior interferes with participation, points will be deducted from the grade. All students begin each 9 weeks with 100 participation points (50 points for interim). Grading adjustments for participation in physical education are as follows:

Student is not in the correct uniform  (uniform warning)

Minus 5

Student does not participate

minus 5

Improper class behavior

Minus 5

Conduct warning

minus 10 points

We do realize there are times when an illness or injury may restrict active participation in physical education. On those special occasions when you feel your child should not participate, please send a signed note with a daytime phone number where you can be reached if we have questions. This note is only good for one day.  This applies to all students

Students excused from participation will be given an alternate assignment, as we cannot grade an injured student on their active participation in physical activity. This is not meant as a punishment. Students will be permitted to return to activity when the doctor or parent releases them or the doctor’s note has expired.

Students who do not attend Hemlock Overlook will be required to do a paper regarding team work and cooperation, the skills learned at Hemlock Overlook.

Students must also follow the sock policy, no golf or ankle socks are allowed, students that do not follow the dress code will receive a uniform warning and lose 5 points from their physical education grade. The physical education grading policy is available on the web.

Only black or white athletic shoes with matching laces (no color laces) will be allowed. Shoes may have velcro closures or laces. No slip-on, zipper shoes, designer sneakers or skate shoes are allowed (ie.  DC's, Vans, Chuck Taylors, etc.).   The shoe must be completely black or white with the same color logo, the logo may be no larger than 1/2 an inch. If you are unsure if the shoe is an approved shoe check with the office before wearing the shoes, since the shoe may not be allowed.
