Physical Education Mrs. Joy pejoy@comcast.netPHYSICAL EDUCATION SCHEDULE
The State of Virginia requires Health and Physical Education as a basic part of the school curriculum. The following list covers those points that are significant to you and your child for this school year. Grading: Students will receive a grade based on physically participating in physical education, following class rules and being in the proper uniform. If behavior interferes with participation, points will be deducted from the grade. All students begin each 9 weeks with 100 participation points (50 points for interim). Grading adjustments for participation in physical education are as follows:
We do realize there are times when an illness or injury may restrict active participation in physical education. On those special occasions when you feel your child should not participate, please send a signed note with a daytime phone number where you can be reached if we have questions. This note is only good for one day. This applies to all students Students excused from participation will be given an alternate assignment, as we cannot grade an injured student on their active participation in physical activity. This is not meant as a punishment. Students will be permitted to return to activity when the doctor or parent releases them or the doctor’s note has expired. Students who do not attend Hemlock Overlook will be required to do a paper regarding team work and cooperation, the skills learned at Hemlock Overlook. 1 93-100 2 85-92 3 77-84 4 70-76 5 Below 70 Physical Education uniform change; we are only going to offer the physical education uniform in maroon starting this year. The grey uniforms may still be worn but I will not be ordering any new stock in grey. I do have some sweatshirts left in grey and they will be available until they are sold out. If you order grey and I do not have that size in stock I will send home maroon. Physical Education uniforms are available only from the school. PE order forms are available on-line, in the school office and Mrs. Joy’s mailbox. When I receive the order I will send the order home with your child. The only sneaker allowed to be worn on PE Day is the school sneaker, the sneaker must be all white or black, no logos, and the shoe must be tied. Students must also follow the sock policy, no golf or ankle socks are allowed, students that do not follow the dress code will receive a uniform warning and lose 5 points from their physical education grade. The physical education grading policy is available on the web. This year we have added maroon mesh shorts for the physical education uniform, either the grey or maroon shorts may be worn. The logo maroon shorts are the only mesh shorts allowed. Also, only the grey logo short sleeve physical education shirt may be worn in Physical Education classes. We did allow other shirts in the past but the was only to recognize the special event and was for that year only. This year the middle school students may only wear the maroon sweatshirt as part of the school uniform. As always If you have any questions please see or email Mrs. Joy at pejoy@comcast.net. Only black or white athletic shoes with matching laces (no color laces) will be allowed. Shoes may have velcro closures or laces. No slip-on, zipper shoes, designer sneakers or skate shoes are allowed (ie. DC's, Vans, Chuck Taylors, etc.). The shoe must be completely black or white with the same color logo, the logo may be no larger than 1/2 an inch. If you are unsure if the shoe is an approved shoe check with the office before wearing the shoes, since the shoe may not be allowed.
Our Mileage Club is back, register on Log-It before our St. Francis Walk-A-Thon and earn tokens for the miles you walk that day. Log- It helps motivate kids to become, and remain physically active, by allowing them to log their daily physical activity steps or miles. In addition to recording their steps or miles, they can participate in a virtual hike across the USA with their school, set daily goals, view their own personal step log, and compare their steps with other kids of the same age and gender. Encourage our students to exercise by walking with them, let’s walk across the USA together. Students may walk at school during recess, lunch time and day care. Inexpensive pedometers can be found at several stores, (Walmart, Target), I recommend a step pedometer since it is the easiest to use.
